    Liner composition

The original GM liners were made from graphite impregnated, polyethylene, not rubber.

Do graphite impregnated polyethylene liners stretch?

When I dissaembled my original spring, this is what I found.
I just assumed since they had stretch, they were a rubber compound.

The repros from Quanta are hard and have zero "give". They will moosh out at the edges over time and are hard as a rock.

          Bill:

I found the Quanta liners I purchased last year to actually be softer and more flexible than the originals and GM replacements. Perhaps they changed materials of construction..........although I called them on this and they (Quanta) stated that they were using the same material as they always have.

I found the DR REBUILD liners to most closely resemble the OEM liners in look and feel.........except that they were 1/2 the thickness. So I decided not to install them. I gave them away to one of the guys in our local club. Don't know if he ever used them.

Under working pressure the PE will give a little over time.

Tracy - where di you get your spring hanger bolts?

They look like the correct black phos color...

Long Island Corvette Supply on the hardware.

Cushion retainer cups came from Gary Beaupre. The repops were too small to properly swage over. His handy dandy installation tool works great too.

                    Re: Mid Year Spring Liners

I too, along with my friend and his '64, are getting ready to rebuild our rear springs. I've been watching this thread hoping that there would be some agreement as to the best source, assuming that there is more than one manufacturer, for liners.

Unfortunately the liners from the three springs we have don't look as good as Gary F's, they are far worse and reusing some doesn't seem to be an option. So, should I simply order liners from Paragon as I was going to and hope for the best or does someone have a suggestion for a vendor?

Sorry to basically "re-start" this thread but while all of the infirmation that has been shared is good, it seems the original questions were not really answered. Thanks!!

                      Lynn,
It looks like there isn't going to be the answer we are looking for with the liners. I have always like the quality of Quanta's products and have been using Long Island Corvette for a long time so I guess I have narrowed my choice down to either of them.
There are members happy with Quanta liners and Quanta responded to me in an email that they haven't changed their composition of there liners since they started making them so I am leaning toward them. Quanta is out of the paint they have been selling but is looking for a new manufacturer.I took the advice Larry Mulder and ordered the paint he suggested: KRYLON SPRAYON #S00740. When I get the spring back from Eaton and reassembled I will let you know how it turns out.

Pete: I think you made good decisions.

When I rebuilt my rear spring last year, I basically evaluated most of the liners available and also looked at other Vette owner's recommendations. The end result was installing QUANTA liners. If DR REBUILD liners were thicker, I would have preferred them due to the material of construction. I did not try Bair's...........and they may have some nice ones, I just don't know. Same with Long Island. Although I suspect that two or three companies making spring liners is probably the limit.....meaning LI and Paragon and Keen and Volunteer and others are probably buying from one of these guys.

The alternative is buy a few different sets like I did and select the best one for your needs/particular car. This gets rather expensive, but it also is a job you don't want to do twice.

                        Larry

EDIT: Two things I found about the SPRAYON #S00740 is to very thoroughly shake the can prior to using (2 minutes or so), and once you start spraying, don't stop until the can is empty. The stuff is a bit thick and wants to plug the spray nozzle and spray tube. So plan ahead and lay out your work accordingly.

Thanks guys, Does Quanta sell the liners? Their website doesn't list them. Do they stilll sell them?

I have suspected thet there may only be one or two suppliers, it's the same for most other repro parts. Unless I do as you suggest, buy a bunch and check them, it's a crap shoot.

How many cans of that paint did you use? If I'm going to order some I want to get as many as I need. thanks!!

                            Lynn:

                            Liners are Part # 28-04. About $7/each x 7 liners or $49.

I used 4 cans of the SPRAYON COLD GALVANIZE (lots of overspray).

PS: I also used the retainer cup "peening tool" available from Gary Beaupre. Again.....many thanks to Gary for providing this tool to NCRS members.

Nice shot -- typical wear patterns. Here's 2 pics; the dirty one removed from my late '65 [I cut off one worn end], compared with new GM liners ordered in 2004. You can see the Lansing MI warehouse sticker.

BOTH are 0.042" thick and 0.18" high on the edge flange.

I used Quanta's liners when I rebuilt my spring about eight years ago, and they've worked out fine.
