Does one have to be a member of the state chapter that they live in? are can one belong to another's states chapter?

You don't have to belong to any local chapters if you don't want to. But I feel you're really missing out if you don't join. I know one St. Louis guy who used to (maybe still does) belong to the Louisiana chapter because they had the best parties. He happened to work for an airline.

I believe you can belong to as many chapters as you want to.

I don't know who belongs to the most, but I doubt it is me.

I belong to Illinois, Michigan and Louisiana.

At various times I have belonged to as many as 8 chapters at the same time. No limit nor a requirement to belong either, but you are missing the "boat by not belonging.
