Jack, we have a vendor here in Denver called Harbart Casting Repair. Maybe you have such a vendor in your area. The subject piece if heated up in an oven before welding. Do you have the broken off pieces? That might make it easier. Anything can be repaired if enough money is spent. Let us know what transpires.
    It's a good life!

Thanks Paul. The broken pieces are long gone. The car sat for several years after puchase and this was discovered while trying to get her street ready in the last month. A previous owner appeared to "BUBBA" this with metric bolts. I'll start searching locally. General consensus is that the motor will have to come out to make the correct repairs.

That pic looks exactly like my Z10 Camaro block. I had a friend who was a head machinist at his job fix it in his basement. It had a slight buldge at the repair when he was done. He also bored and taped the hole a little deeper and made me a longer bolt. Its been on there since 2002. I did not have the broke piece.

I just noticed both yours are broke. Mine was only the outside hole.

This will be a very difficult repair. I have no doubt the only way to do it will be to remove the engine from the car and tear the engine down to bare block.

So, how does something like this happen? Well, the most likely scenario is loose starter bolts and a loose or non-existent starter brace.

a "kick back" from too much spark advance will do this also. not using the correct "knurled" starter bolts allowing the starter to move.
