    1959 bellhousing part number

I have a 1959 vette built in august of 1959 with 245 hp 2x4 set up. What is the correct part number for a bellhousing.

    Mike------

I assume what you're actually referring to is the CASTING number of the bellhousing as opposed to the finished part number which appears nowhere on the part. The casting number is 3733365.

By the way, in case you really are interested in the PART NUMBER of the finished bellhousing, that number is GM #3755343.

just my two cents, but be sure when you buy your 3733365 bellhousing that you pay special attention to the ball stud. On passenger cars the ball stud is installed from the inside, while on corvettes it is installed from the outside, so they are drilled differently.

You can see some pics on my old thread "3733365 bellhousing date and casting number visibility"

That's correct - the passenger car version was machined (from the inside) with 7/16"-20 threads, and the Corvette version had the 13/16"-16 tapped hole with the large counterbore for the flange on the outside-installed #3729000 ball stud.

          John,

Do you have any idea WHY they did that?

            Ian -

I don't know - the inside-installed passenger car 7/16"-20 stud arrangement had been in production for some time, and the new #3729000 outside-installed stud was introduced for the first time on the Corvette, and stayed there for 24 years.

ic.. so that was the new method of installing the stud. Probably more structurally sound. From the inside I'd think the stud could loosen over time, whereas installed from the outside it would just tighten and the bolt flange is pulling against the rim of the mounting hole.
