    front steering knuckle question

Can someone tell me what the gasket like material is between the spindle face and the rotor on a 65? I can't find it in the assembly manual. A part # would be great.

It was a cork gasket and it goes between the steering knuckle spindle and the rotor slash shield. It was GM #3828581 but it was discontinued in December, 1983 and replaced by GM #3953421 which was a bit different in size and made of a cellulosic material but will work. It's discontinued, too, though.

No problem, however. Dr. Rebuild can fix you up with an exact reproduction cork gasket under their number 6000378.

The front steering knuckle and brake assembly was delivered to St. Louis as a completely assembled unit. Components of any assembly supplied to St. Louis as an assembly are not shown in the AIM. There was absolutely no need for the folks at St. Louis to know what parts were components of the assembly or to know how to put the thing together----that was done for them elsewhere.

I presume the purpose of the gasket was to prevent road dirt from getting to the face of the spindle.

Thanks again. I always find it easier to remember when I understand the reason.
