Anything special to know about the rag joint for the 63? I'm just fixin' to replace mine and wonder about the best part number and if grounding was an issue back then as well. 7 laminations correct for 63?

Here is the assembly drawing (5690809) for the 1963-1966 C2 standard coupling assembly.

Yes, it originally had a 7 ply disc with a 5690859 ground strip. The drawing was changed to a screen ground, 7 ply disc in 1971.

I stand corrected, the 67-68 GM rags I have here are NOT grounded. They are 7-ply, yellow ink but no wire mesh in them either! I have one dated 8/10 and the other is at least a year older if not more.
I do have one 63-66 NOS service rag. It does have the mesh and 7 ply but the copper strap was not part of the construction.
It's too late to return the ones I have too. I'm pretty sure they were grounded in prior years but at least they're rigid.

                Very cool. Thanks Jim.

If I need to rebuild mine I guess I'd need a kit of some sort rather than buying a replacement joint. Does GM have the correct kits or where else can I get one that's right?

GM never serviced component parts of these coupling assemblies. The aftermarket does, though. I believe that most of the Corvettes parts suppliers carry these.

Re: Rag Joint Question- Jim Shea, Joe Lucia

I finally made contact with an engineer at Saginaw/Nexteer. I forwarded the address for this thread to him. Saginaw outsourced the manufacturing of the flexible coupling to an outside source years ago. That source took possession of the induction machines to hot upset the ends of the stop pins.

They are probably using the Saginaw sources for the bow tie castings (steering gear flange) as well as other parts. The components in Gary's pictures look nearly identical to the older Saginaw assemblies. (Of course we still have the lack of continuity issue.)

Now a bit of bad news. I am going on vacation starting Thursday for the next three weeks and will have limited internet and telephone access. So I am not going to be able to follow this thread in that time. I will try one more time tomorrow to see if there is any further info from Saginaw/Nexteer.

                    Jim
