    68 Hood latches

    Joe Lucia
Joe I hope you don't mind me asking you but I went back to an old post of yours (Aug 2007) on the 68 female hood latches and in the quest for what really happened I came up with ????? those three different supposed 68 left sides. I see your ref. to the 3922201 then the 3948142 and the 3966628. I think the first version had a 90 degree bend to accept that brass barrel end of the cable then a straight one and finally the one for the clevis pen style depicted in the AIM. There is some delta in the spring arrangement also. Look at the three I came across, and what do you see in them? I do have a picture of that 2202 that came with that old 2201, I think. I'll try and add it.

Thanks. I thought there were no more 68ers out there.

The first two pictures are of the latches on my April built 68. They use the brass barrels to attach the cable to the latch.

The second two are from my Dec 68 built 69. They use the clevis pins to attach the cable. I believe this style may have made it into late 68 production.

As for springs, the 68 I have seen have had springs on both the right and left side latches and the 69 only on the right.

I don't think the latch on the far right in your first picture was ever used on a 68 as it has no attachment points for a spring.

Did you mean the far left as it had no spring attachment hole? The far rtight has a spring and the brass attachment as an early 68.

I think the latch assembly on the right side of your first picture is likely the early 1968 GM #3922201. I think the one in the center is the later 1968 GM #3948141 (also used for most of 1969).

From what I can see of it, the one on the left side of the photo is a GM #3966627. The latter was never originally used on any 1968 Corvette. It was used beginning in very late 1969.
