    1965 Turn Signal Switch

A friend of mine from the St. Louis area just called me with a problem with his turn signal switch. It seems that the switch would only cancel in one direction and, as a result, he failed the state annual vehicle inspection.

He's obtained a new switch. However, when he took the column apart he claims he found no canceling cam installed. He's pretty sure the switch was replaced at least once before. He's wondering if the replacement switches obviate the need for the cam or if the cam is indeed required. My recollection tells me that there was some kind of "actuator" involved, too, in the canceling mechanism.

My knowledge of the 1963-66 columns is negligible. Anyone out there have any experience with turn signal switch replacement on a 1965 column?

    Joe,

On a 67 the "cancel cam" is a couple of bumps on the horn slip ring piece. There needs to be something that senses rotational movement of the steering wheel to cancel the turn signals.

The photo is of a 67 column and the cancel cam is the "brass slip ring" next to the coil spring. The "bumps" are on the sides of the black plastic.

Joe, Here is a great article by Dave Zubener that shows all of the 65 components. On 65 there is a cancel cam, I just finished my 66 and it definitetely had a cancel cam as well. Hope this helps. - Joe

Joe -- geez; for once we may be able to give info to you . Here's the correct '64-66 turn signal switch. What you see is what I pulled out of my '65. The NOS one that was in the box had a nylon (color) cancelling arm [don't know why this one is black]. But this switch is only half of the operation; the other piece is the cancelling cam that screws into the steering wheel hub, and returns the black arm back to the neutral position [shown] when turn is completed (sorry no pic; check repro catalogs). Maybe one of the tabs is worn or broken off.
