Re: How would this part judge? (new Long Island exhaust extensions)
I suggest one look at this from the owner's perspective. The judging reference manual say the word "appears" in the evaluation of pieces on the car. No where is there a reference as to metallurgical verification. Use of a magnet is not a visual evaluation.
I suggest if one judge cannot distinguish stainless steel 420 grade from 304 grade or carbon steel by looking at it then he is not qualified to make a deduction.
I completely agree, if you can't tell visually, then IMHO no deduct should be taken. We follow this same standard for every other aspect of the car including the stamp pad, why shouldn't we follow it for stainless vs carbon steel?- Top

I don't think their extensions WITH the part number is magnetic (referencing LI part # 07-01B).Chris Enstrom

Re: How would this part judge? (new Long Island exhaust extensions)
Chris, I was on their web site a couple of weeks ago and again today and I believe they made a change in the description. I know a couple of weeks ago when I was viewing these two exhaust extension I thought there was something amiss in there description(don't recall exactly what it was) and when I viewed it today it has been changed. Sorry if I misled anyone.- Top

From a strictly visual aspect, they appear to be a heavier guage sheet metal than the originals. Would be curious what thickness is? I have a couple repros and they are heavier guage than my originals. Just a thought.

Good news, the Long Island part passed judging in Joplin.
Yours truly garnered a 97.4%. Now on to PV in Novi.
Oh, and here's a picture of the extensions.

Re: How would this part judge? (new Long Island exhaust extensions)
For what it's worth, the GM blueprint for the tail pipe states that "service parts to include part number, rolled or stamped with numerals approximately .180" high".
Sounds like that's saying pipes for production were not stamped with a part number.
The print also mentions the stainless steel used. Higher quality stainless is less magnetic. The specs call for "welded or seamless tubing .023"-.025" wall thickness A.I.S.I. type 430 stainless steel chromium 15%-18% prefered".Last edited by Michael H.; May 5, 2011, 10:56 PM.- Top

Re: How would this part judge? (new Long Island exhaust extensions)
Gentlemen,
All examples of original exhaust tips I have ever seen do NOT have the part numbers stamped.
All examples of replacement exhaust tips sold across the counter have the part numbers stamped.
Thru the years I'm sure several exhaust tips were replaced with the across the counter tips in the blue/green boxes and the myth was born.
I think my vote on this one goes to Michael and John D.

Joe, you're right on and Michael has provided the exact wording from the print.
Its a specific call out for service so GMPD would know what they are handling.
Anyone at the supplier or the assembly plant would know they were handling - exhaust tips.
Sort of like where some of the hose discussions should head- Top

Re: How would this part judge? (new Long Island exhaust extensions)
There are over 50 different grades of stainless steel, depending on how much chromium, nickel and molybdenum is present.
Here's a "SS for dummies"-type quote I got off a Google search.
5. Is stainless steel magnetic? Answer: There are several "types" of stainless steel. The 300 series (which contains nickel) is NOT magnetic. The 400 series (which just contains chromium and no nickel) ARE magnetic.- Top
