I had it replated and it came out very nice. I don't have a repro to compare it with but in the attached photo the dimple is very evident. I was under the impression that some repro don't have the dimple.

Hi Doug, Your oil cap looks very nice. I have never been able to have a oil cap with a dimple sucessfully replated. I have put notes and told the plater over the phone. But still the caps come back minus the dimple.
    Yours is quite impressive. JD

How about another post Doug showing the gang your flat washer on the fuel filter stud.

      John,

How can the dimple be removed in the replating process?

David, The platers buff it off somehow.
Saw your nice ad on ebay with the oil caps. Great photos. Thanx, JD

          John,

I think it would be easier to chrome plate the black phosphate caps. I believe you could easily buff off the black phosphate with a wire wheel to get down to bare steel without any metal removal. The platers must use something very coarse to grind off the old chrome and end up removing a lot of metal.

On a replate or first time thru, they hit these with acid, no need to worry about what is there - it will be gone.

My experience is they want to buff the daylights out of everything. Take all the flaws in ignition shielding, they don't like to do a job that leaves all the stamping die draw scratches, nicks and wrinkles in there.

SO they buff away with seriously aggressive abrasives...

David, The black phophate caps I bought in the late 70's and early 80's were not the same configuration. JD

                John,
As you can see in my photos on my first post on March 21st the black phosphate cap was the same as my NOS chrome cap. I have 2 of these black caps (GM 3714893 and they came in blue & white GM paper wrappers with clear on the back side. I can not remember when and where I got them.
