Tach & Speedo cable lube ?s

Tach: I have a new Tach cable (came with purchase of car) that I plan to install after cluster restoration. Does it need to be lubed or are they ready to install [it is from LICS if that matters]?

Speedo: I would like to lube the speedo cable at this time too. I can just barely hear it when under way. How is this done exactly? Do I need the gizmo that attaches and then pump chasis grease through it? Any particular grease? Any specfic do's or don'ts? Should I just replace?

Any and all advice and comments welcome.

    Phil -

Forget the adapter gizmo that uses chassis grease, especially if you live in a cold winter temperature area; chassis grease gets thick and stiff in the cold.

Most flexible cable lubricants are graphite-based - you'll find them in auto parts stores, and Corvette Central sells "Kable-Ease", made specifically for flexible speedo and tach cables.

The speedo flexible cable core can only be removed from the casing from the top end, where it attaches to the speedo head; tach cable is the same.

I bought one of those adaptor gizmos many years ago, and the first time I tried to use it I noticed grease oozing out through a split in the cable sheath. I stopped, reconnected the cable, and it has worked fine ever since. Believe that was at least 30 years ago. Have always expected some day I'd have to change it out be it broken or bouncing, but not yet.
