What is the best battery replacement for my '65 for judging? Where can I buy one that is as close to original and is reliable?

You can spend a LOT of money for a reproduction battery which may or may not be reliable (advertised in the "Driveline"), or you can buy a current Delco Group 24 replacement and take the 12-point standard deduction. My Delco #24-7YR is ten years old, and works like new.- Top

Dean,
To answer your question, the closest battery available is advertised in the "Driveline" as:
Restoration Battery
5484 Race Road
Cincinnati, OH. 45247
Phone 513 574-4481
It is the closest thing to the original and people have had varied service depending on their ability to read and take care of the battery.

That was before Delco batteries turned to *****. They are now made ???? and are worthless (same as Optima). The dealership that has replaced mine under warranty 4 times in 3 years says they order them by the pallet because of the failure rate.- Top

A Delco Battery is made by Johnson Control and the Optima Battery is made by Exide.

Actually, Optima is Johnson Controls' own brand, and I don't think they sell that particular battery architecture to anyone else.
Johnson Controls and Exide are now the only battery manufacturers in North America, and virtually any battery you buy will be made by one or the other.
Most brands that I'm familiar with, including house brands from Walmart, Costco, Pep Boys, and Autozone, are made by Johnson Controls. For the most part it's the same basic battery - just a different stick-on label. If you just peel off the labels you have a plain black battery, which is relatively unobtrusive in most installations.

Regardless, my point was that the old Delco and Optima batteries were very good but anything made in the last few years is junk. The local parts house quit carrying Optima's because of a greater than 50% return rate and the Chevy dealer says the same about Delco's.- Top

I believe the Walmart brand has a three year full replacement and there good batteries are six or seven year batteries. I purchased one for my 63 and did exactly as Duke pointed out stripping the labels and just a black battery, it looks fine.- Top

I bought a Restoration Battery original Delco eye type 2 years ago for my '67 for judging. I have had it in the entire time and have had no problems with it. It is on BatteryMINDer when it is sitting in the garage and not driven for longer stretches.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

All------
So, if they're all made by Johnson Controls or Exide (which the vast majority are manufactured by either of these two) and they're all "junk", why not buy the one that has a "Delco" label on it and get the extra judging points it confers? It would seem like a simple way to get extra judging points without paying too much of a premium. After all, some folks spend hundreds of dollars just to gain 1 or 2 judging points.
By the way, Delco also has the longest warranty in the business.
Also, I believe the Sears Die Hard Platinum series batteries are manufactured by a company other than Exide or Johnson Controls. However, I've forgotten the name of that company. The Die Hard Platinum, although costing about twice as much as the Die Hard Gold, are an excellent battery. However, they won't garner the judging points that a Delco-branded battery will.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Joe,
I purchased this Walmart battery last summer for my 63, the price was $65 and the delco was (I think) $89 or $94.
I don't remember the delco having a three year full replacement warranty plus the Walmart battery had the same CCA as the delco seven year.
Walmart # MAXX 24N, 875 cranking amps @ 32* and 700 CCA, no problems so far, PIA to install..- Top

Thanks Joe,
Maybe it was the $$ then that made my decision, I did not remember that warranty.- Top

Re: Battery Replacement for '65 Coupe 327/300Hp
I bought a Restoration Battery 4 or 5 years ago, and it worked fine for 2 years in the car and still tests good today out of the car.
When you pull the fake caps on mine you can see that there's a smaller, self-contained battery inside that takes up about 3/4 of the outer case. So, I think when the inner battery goes bad you can simply cut a hole in the outer case bottom and remove and replace the inner battery indefinitely, making the outer case "immortal."
This would be similar to what a fellow member did with an older original case as seen in this link in post #17:
