So does that mean that the longer bolts for the center of the manifolds that hold the collector heat shield in place do NOT get washers but the others on the ends do?

Alex -

Only the outer pairs of exhaust manifold bolts on each side use the special thick washers, and they go between the french lock and the manifold (not between the french lock and the bolt head). The longer center pair of manifold bolts don't use washers.

Your crankcase vent tube goes down the right (passenger) side of the block, as shown in the Assembly Manual.

I'm not familiar with any oil pan bolt-mounted clips for the plug wires on a '56, but I haven't seen them all. The photos below show what I'm used to seeing (from the original '56 we observed at Kissimmee in January).

As I recall the way it goes is pretty clear in the AIM. But I may be thinking of the passenger car AIM which I also use. Also suggest checking the photos in Noland's books. I get out my magnifying glass and really get into it.

I don't see them in the AIM. There are similar parts in the passenger car AIM but the passenger car does not have the ignition wire supports that go under the exhaust manifold. That support would seem to keep things in place.

Probably not, but they are used on a '59 Corvette.

Those screw-on wire separators weren't used in '56 - the pairs of rubber grommets in the ends of the "banana" supports served the same purpose. See your Assembly Manual, section 6, sheet 3.00.
