    63 Starter Bolts

I have a JM 63/64 question page 135 says starter bolts are recessed hex head bolts, In the AIM its shows a hex and and split washer on the outside bolt, Then at the bottom of judging manuel theres a pic of what appears to be a hex head with a washer.

Any way what the correct bolt for 63 4 spd. car, Maybe someone has ran into this while judging. Is this just a JM mistake???

The starter bolts are special 3/8-16UNC thread with knurled shanks to keep the starter in place. Two different lengths and grade 8 if I remember correctly.

Gene, Thanks for the reply, I know the typical starter bolts are a recessed head bolt and have a spec. shank, but I thought that because the ground cable attachs to the outter bolt that maybe it was a different style head with a washer. when I was reassy. my chassis, I had bagged and marked starter bolts not even looking at what was there there was one hex head, so I looked in the AIM and it showed what appeared to be a hex head bolt with a washer.

Yes, there is a built in washer face on both the bolts. The outer bolt gets two harness rings on it. One the battery ground wire and the other is a ground from the wire harness from the blower motor end of the harness.

I use a lock washer on both bolts but I think the assembly calls for only a washer on the outer bolt as you said.

Hi Ed, it seems that 1963 starter DOESNT have washer headed bolts, they are hex head without the built in washer, and the outer bolt does use a flat washer. Phil 8063

            Edward,

I will post a picture of the starter bolts on my 63 later today, not sure if mine are original. I know they do not have washer head and I am not sure if they are grade eight. The outer bolt has a serrated collar and a flat washer, the long bolt I can't remember.

This picture is a motor off ebay some years ago and if you can blow it up the outer bolt along with the spl. washer is shown.
