    C1 270HP Harmonic Balancer

My engine is a 270HP and had the base engine harmonic balancer. I know the high horsepower balancers are very scarce from my research on this forum and looking for the correct one.

but before I by an aftermarket one, does anyone have another suggestion?

From the pictures I see on their web sites, it looks like Zip, Corvette Central, Paragon and others sell the same replacemente one.

    Thanks,
    Don Harris

          More questions?

The machinist asked if I wanted to have the crank tapped for a Harmonic Balancer bolt. From research on this forum, it sound like a good idea as there have been a number of folks who said their HB actually fell off.

Will installation of this bold take a judging hit?

I suppose if I end up with an aftermarket HB then the judging hit will be there anyway, but will this be more of a hit?

            Donald -

Don't worry about the hit for the tapped hole; I'd be surprised if it was even a point (the deviation is the missing metal from drilling the hole, not the presence of the bolt and washer). Have it drilled/tapped (7/16"-20) and use the bolt.

              Re: C1 270HP Harmonic Balancer

I was able to buy a fully restored high HP balancer for a '59 270 from Damper Dudes about two years ago. I paid roughly $600 for it (no trade) and ultimately didn't use it in my rebuild. I sold it about a year later for $700 and the guy was thrilled to get it. Check google to find their contact information. They most likely won't have one, but get your name on their list and you might get lucky.
              Good luck.

As a judge we are instructed to not take off for a bolt in the harmonic balancer for this year because it is a safety feature.

                  Unfortunately, the basic info is missing - is it a 59-61 270HP or a 57-8 270HP?

Excuse me once again....Is this a written Judging rule ? Would it not be contrary to how it left the factory ? There are other things that take a hit like brake hose crimping....and more and more...maybe i just don't get it.

Yes in 1986 or so my '59 270 original balancer fell off one Friday afternoon going home from work. Got on the highway, normal acceleration, and heard a big bang, looked in the side mirror and saw this orange and black circular thingy spinning like a yo-yo. It then proceeded to pass me in the left lane and fly into the median! The big bang must've been when it hit the third arm bearing assembly. 10 minutes later walking around the thick grass I found it. The pulley looked like the top of a open can of Maxwell House coffee after you peel it open it with a Boy Scout can opener.

I bought a GM service replacement, attached my harmonic balancer face to it and hammered it on like the book said. Like a fool I threw the old one in the trash! OMG what was I thinking!

10 years later when I rebuit the engine I had the crank threaded to use the 7/16"x20 GM bolt, lock, and thick washer setup used on the later engines.

Yeah, unfortunately I just realized mine was incorrect base engine version. Not
Sure chasing a few points is worth that price anyway

Does anyone have a recommendation for an aftermarket balancer for my 270HP 60?

Should I just go with what Paragon or Corvette Central sells?

Summit Racing has a slew of balancers that show up for 60 Corbette application, but I couldn't find any that they specifically listed for the 270HP
