How to remove C1 58-62 dash insert?

    Hi all,

Can someone tell me how to remove the 58-62 dash insert? I've seen write ups on how to restore the insert on Joe Calcagno's rare corvette site and the restorer CD, but I can't seem to find one on how to remove it. I've removed the package tray and grab bar. The two mounting brackets for the grab bar remain on either side of the passenger dash cove, and prevent me from pulling out the insert assembly. Is there a trick to it, or do you need to remove one of the brackets so it can be easily pulled out? They are spot welded so I want to avoid this if possible.

It has been a long time since I have had mine out but I think the weld you have is possibly Bubba installed (maybe not??). The ST-12 doesn't show the brackets, just the insert on page 1-7. Did you look at dash pad replacement here in the archives or on the NCRS CD? Good luck, Don H.

No, I think they are original and I read references to them being spot welded in the AIM. The grab bar attaches to them with another little plate with two screws on each side.

If I remember right there are two studs up behind the insert with nuts on 'em.... Reach up behind and see if you feel them.. Get those out and kind of wiggle everything out of the cove.....

The side brackets were NOT welded in originally. They had two large round-head clutch-head screws holding them to the bracket/brace on each side. The screw farthest from the insert is hard to reach when the dash pad is in---there is a fine line between t******* the pad enough to access those and t******* them so much that the chrome bezel doesn't fully cover the t******* of the dash pad.

PS--for some reason when I add "ming" to "trim", it turns to asterisks. I have no idea why, but my post makes no sense without rectifying that. When I edited, that didn't help either.

            Mike -

The censor robot doesn't like the word "r i m m i n g" (if you put a space between each letter, the robot doesn't recognize the word).

So on mine here there are the brackets mounted on each side, and then there were little plates that were on those and on the grab bar end, and the screwed went through those. everything looks original. So the dash brackets pictured also are bolted in? or they are welded? The AIM shows them welded. I'll post a picture from the AIM later today.

                  Ian,

My brackets are bolted in like other have indicated. I don't see how you will get the insert out without removing at least one of the brackets.

                  Regards,

                  Dennis

OK, that's good to know. I wasn't sure what I was looking at back there, and seeing as how most everything is difficult/impossible/expensive to replace I didn't want to dig in without knowing a little more.

                    Thanks!

Ian, Ok I think this is the issue. See pics for "skeleton" view of the parts I have here for the 59 project....Note the Z06 support structure in photo 2. Also the word "PAIN" from the Advil bottle bracket support I strategically located in the last photo. (sorry it's late and I get a little punchy this time of night)

I think if you carefully cut/trim/slice/dice/carve/ away some of the dash pad behind the area of the grab bar end caps you will expose the clutch head 1/4"-20 screws to remove the brackets. It appears that the dash pad was trimmed too close to the brackets and is hiding the problem.

                      edit-ps what's this "t*******" stuff all about.....Huh? wow that's cool it turns t r i m m i n g into tasterisks. How'd they do that?

That's exactly what I have. OK so they are screwed in with clutch head screws. I'll cut a little away from the pad to get at them. Thanks Rich!
