Because we want it better than the factory paint which didn't last long because it didn't have primer first.

Factory never bothered with primer; why are we doing so fifty years later? Factory was dealing with new components, so it is probably a good idea to wipe everything clean of oil and grease, but beyond that just grab the rattle can and spray.

I have never primed any parts before spraying with enamel.
Did four different corvette engines with the Quanta product and never had an issue.

I did however spend forever cleaning all the parts with lacquer thinner.

From what i remember it took me about 48 hours and coating and waiting before I got what I thought was appropriate coverage (around 4 coats)
The Quanta paint is thin compared to others, so just have patience and don't rush it.


FWIW -
also painted my 6pack Challenger engine with PPG enamel (no hardeners ) and it has not cracked or flaked and its been nearly 6 years.
bare metal parts, cleaned with lacquer thinner ....

I have never had any luck with Rustoleum as other paints seem not to be compatible with it. Stay with one brand of paint works best. Be advised to apply coats within the prescribed directions.

A primer designed for engines works best and will make for better coverage with the orange. High temperature engine paint (VHT) is pretty fail safe product.

The problem is what is called fast dry Enamel . Which is Enamel thinned with Lacquer thinner . So the next day you were spraying Lacquer thinner over enamel .Not good . it will wrinkle.Kyrlons new and improved paint is the same way. You can not re coat it. has to be stripped.Anytime you see fast dry enamel .Get it right the first time because there is no second chance.If you use Bill Hirsch paint make sure not to get ANY antifreeze on it . It stains the it.
