    70 console ground

The AIM shows two ground lugs for the console/ashtray area. One on the heater control and one on the ashtray housing.

When I took mine apart I only found the lug on the heater control and there was no extra ground wire. This is the original harness and nothing was cut.

I experimented with trying a lug on the ashtray housing. The shifter plate will not go on with the ground lug on the ashtray housing.

Which one is it? Could it be both? Should there be some kind of jumper from the heater control to the ashtray housing?

If not on the ashtray how does the lighter get grounded?

    Thanks, Bill

Bill, There should be a ground on the metal console itself,It should be a spad on the console somewhere I cannot remember where as its been a few years since I had mine out( maybe it was the screw on retainer on the lighter housing). This ground is used to light the shifter ind. and lighter lamp.

        Thanks Edward.

The AIM shows two location yet there is only one spade with two wires attached.

The lights work fine. If there is a second ground spade on the lighter housing as the AIM calls out the shifter plate will not go on the console as best I can tell. I have tried.

Bill, I may not be following you correctly, the lamp on the shifter console does not light?

            Hi Edward,

All the lights work fine. I have the one console ground connected as found when disassembled and it jibes with the AIM. However, the AIM shows a second ground lug attached to the lighter housing.

The one on the lighter housing is the one in question. There is no wire for the ground and the lug gets in the way of installing the shifter plate when attached as shown in the AIM.

Did the factory do away with that lug on some cars? When at swap meets and looking at some of the used shifter plates the lug is attached to the ash tray housing as shown in the AIM.

Should my 70 non A/C vert have both grounds and if so where is the wire that would go to the ashtray housing?

            Thanks,

            Bill

Bill, I don't have a '70 or the AIM for it handy, but I do have a '71 and it's AIM which should be virtually identical. UPC 12, Sheet B2 shows only one ground terminal to be installed (on heater control). UPC 12, Sheet B5 shows only one mating wire in the harness to connect to that ground terminal...

                HI Jack,

Based on the 71 AIM I am thinking maybe the 69 is different. The AIM for 70 has some 69 type detail.

What I do know is that I reassembled the console with the ground on the heater control and everything works. Lighter, Fan, lights etc..

                Thanks,

                Bill
