I recentling purchased a AC fuel pump on ebay. It has raised AC on the body and numbers stamped on the flange. The number is 40709AC09355. What does the 09355 number mean? Production date? THANKS FOR THE HELP.

Re: 1969 350/350 Corvette fuel pump
Yes, I think the "09355" is some sort of a date code, but, if I ever knew, I've forgotten how to decode it.
By the way, the AC type 40709 is NOT the original fuel pump installed on a 1969 L-46. The original pump was an AC type 40658. The 40709 was the pump used for 1970-71 LT-1 which became the SERVICE pump available from GM for 1968-69 Corvette small blocks. Not only are the numbers different, but the configuration of the 40709 is considerably different than a 40658.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1969 350/350 Corvette fuel pump
I made a mistake on the AC type number (that's what sometimes happens when I do things just from memory). The correct number is 40658. I've corrected it in my previous post here. Here are some photos of an NOS example. You will note considerable configurational difference from a type 40709. However, the 40709 will SERVICE the 1968-69 Corvette small block applications perfectly. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Joe,
Will a different pump-to-carb line be needed?
I suspect so, but that's just my guess.

No, the pump-to-carb line is the same for either the 40658 or the 40709. I know that for sure as I've used both pumps with the same pump-to-carb line.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1969 350/350 Corvette fuel pump
In January 1994 I bought 4 NOS 68-69 Corvette (327,350) fuel pumps for $20 ($5 each) at the NCRS swap meet at Cypress Gardens in Florida but the pumps were not in boxes. Each one was stamped "DI 40658" (dated April 1969 according to my date code theory). According to my research GM # 6417337 (AC # 40658) was discontinued in August 1971 and replaced with GM # 6470110 (AC # 40709) which was then discontinued sometime between Jan. 1982 and Jan. 1990.- Top

These fuel pumps take very interesting (but confusing) courses through GM parts channels.
The GM #6417337 aka AC type 40658 fuel pump was discontinued through the GM parts channel in August, 1971 just as you mentioned. However, it remained available through the Delco parts channel for MANY years after that. In fact, it was available through Delco until just a few years ago. Of course, AC ceased the manufacture of mechanical fuel pumps in the early 1980's so any manufactured after that time were manufactured by non-GM manufacturing sources. But, AC manufactured the type 40658 right up until the end of mechanical fuel pump manufacturing.
The GM #6470110, aka, AC type 40709, was discontinued through the GM parts channel in early 1982, about the time that mechanical fuel pump manufacturing by AC ended. However, the AC type 40709 remained available through the Delco parts channel for MANY years after that. In fact, it's still available unless it's been discontinued very recently! Of course, it's not manufactured by AC but that's the same for ANY ACDelco branded mechanical fuel pump for a long time.
These days, if one wants a fuel pump for 1968-69 Corvette small block that's configured like an original 40658, purchase an Airtex #40709 (yes, 40709!). Of course, there will be nuance differences from the original pump (e.g. no AC embossment, etc.) but that's the same for any mechanical fuel pumps still available from GM or ACDelco.
If one wants a pump configured like an AC 40709 then purchase a Carter M6120.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
