    Problem Painting Bare Steel

I sanded all of the rust off of the two rear bumper braces on my 1960. The result was shiny, smooth steel. I then sprayed a light coat of self etching primer; waited two hours and then sprayed gloss black paint over the primer. This morning I removed the painted parts from the spray rack and black paint started flaking off. I am going to strip all of the paint/primer off and start over, but don't know what to do to prevent flaking. Will etching the bare steel first with muriatic acid create a better surface for the paint to adhere to?

Sand or bead blast the steel first. Prime with a zinc chromate primer or dp 90 for good adhesion. Let dry. Then finish with the finish paint of your choice. Make sure temperature is above 65 degrees.

      Joe,
Try the old standard that has worked for years, Rustolium primer & Rustolium paint. It's hard to beat for a rattle can.
The only draw back is that it will oxidize if in direct sun light over the years, but under the hood or car it's fine.
Now the can says it's not good for heat but I used it on motorcycle cylinders back then & now without a problem.

If your bead or? blasting media is contaminated with the slightest amount of oil you won't have adhesion - guaranteed.

The post clean-up step should involve a solvent wash if you are bug boming these as it sounds you are. Hot phos bath is the best but that is another topic.

I usually spray the part with 3M Weatherstrip remover (the red rattle can), to remove the last bits of oil and any oil from fingerprints. Then I spray with primer or go straight to enamel paint. Wear rubber gloves.

Another trick is use a heat gun or hair drier heat the item and then paint it. I learned this many years ago real helps when the weather is colder.

The primer you are using may need to be sanded before applying the topcoat. I asked this question in regards to some zinc chromate spray can paint I plan to use and this is what the manufacturer told me.

degrease, blast, detergent wash, solvent clean.....
prime and paint compatibility? paint might not want an etching primer

Go to Home depot and buy two cans of Rust-oleum. Buy one can of rusty metal primer 201857 and one can of satin black 7777. Now make some hooks to hang your parts from out of coat hanger wire.Prepare the parts and hang them.Spray one caot of rusty metal primer on all parts. Wait ten minutes and spray at least two coats of black with 10 minutes between coats.NOW PAY ATTENTION PLEASE. Do not spray primer one day and color the next or the top coat will attack the primer and you get to do it again.
I've been painting chassis parts this way for 20 years and many cars. Try it and let me know how it turns out.

                        Powder coat.

Or, just Rustoleum over bare metal if you don't want to do Rustoleum over primer.

If you live in someplace moist, i would opt for powder coat, as you can't see them anyway.

                        IMHO.

You will not get the same results without primer, trust me. Powder coat is OK over new metal, but on used parts there's no way to fill or repair rust pits. What you see is what you get with powder coating.
