RE: 3782609 Water Pump Usage on Late 1963 Corvettes

Please find attached pictures of the 3782609 water pump from an original owner 1963 Corvette #18,845 with engine code of F0627RE. This is an all original untouched "Survivor" 1963 Corvette. Note: heater hose fitting with two nicks and the bypass hose fitting logo.
Can anyone show a picture of a "Survivor" 1963 Corvette with an original 3859326 water pump?

    Hi Bill.....

I'll bet a lotta dollars that there was no such thing as a 3859326 water pump originally installed on any 63 Corvette. (and probably not any 64's either)

I've always been told these mid year pumps always had flat plates on the back side for covers. Some enlightenment please. RS

Great pictures Bill, The by-pass hose fitting and the heater hose fitting are just as I thought they would look like. It doesn't look like there is any paint on them at all, could you commet on this.

Bill, Thanks for the great pics and info on the 609. Glad to see so many 63 owners, restorers & NCRS members are agreeing that this is the real deal. A 326 pump on a 63 would be a definite minus factor. Thanks, JD

                Mike -

The heater hose fitting was installed at St. Louis, so it wouldn't have any orange paint on it.

                  Mike,

If you do a little research on this, I think you'll find that the bypass fitting and hose/clamps were originally painted orange along with the rest of the engine. (this applies to all 63-67 with 327)

Technically truck parts were not installed on Corvettes. Attached are Chevrolet Grey Iron parts list with applications for those model years.

Thanks Mark. On the sheet on the left, it looks like the only water pump number shown for both 63 and 64 with the bypass hole is the 3782609. That has to mean there was no such thing as a 3859326 in existance for 63 or 64?

Do you have a guess as to when the 3859326 pump did actually become available to the Flint engine plant?

                        Russ,
The small bock Chevrolet Corvette engine used the flat back plate with large pan head screws from 1955-1960. The 3856284 water pump that was used on the 1965 "396" and early 1966 "427" engines through late 1965 water pump casting dates used a flat back plate with large pan head screws.

                          Bill,

Here's another untouched low mileage late 63 with a 3782609 pump. The car is in the 19,xxx VIN range. Pic was taken in the late 70's.

And note the orange paint on the bypass fitting, hose and clamps. All 63-67 small block bypass fittings and hoses were painted orange.

Does anyone think a 3859326 pump was ever used for 63 and early/mid 64?

Hanson, Thanks for the nice pic. Lots of detail in that photo. Just blew it up on my flat screen TV monitor and printed it.
Notice the hose clamps on the bypass hose also. You don't see those very often at the shows.
Personally I don't know too much about 64 stuff but still waiting to see a an original 63 with a 326. Never saw one yet.
                            Thanks again, JD

I don't think you will see an ORIGINAL 3859326 water pump on any 63, JD. That casting number didn't exist on this planet in 1963. I think a lot of folks think it did though.

Yes, the 63 in that pic had only about 9000 miles as I remember. Totally original and untouched. Original belts and hoses. Original everything. It came out of the Jerome Shinkay collection in about 1976.
