R&R Time for a 1974 Front Pinion Seal - Differential

Does anyone know the R&R time for the differential front pinion seal? I do not have a lift and cannot crawl under cars like I used to so was thinking of taking the 1974 to a local GM dealer that maintains my DD (newish Impala). But I do not want someone there to experiment/learn on the job so I need an approximate flat rate time. I believe the seal is only about $20.00 for a quality (non-Chinese) version. I was thinking GM itself or NAPA as the source. The local NAPA is very good with some real oldtime "car people" working there.

    Paul,

If you would like the adventure of crossing the border into a foreign country, I can recommend an independent shop that many of us use for the type of work you're considering.

Thanks Mike. That's a bit of a long trip for what appears to be a fairly routine repair but we shall see come April. I'll speak first with a friend (Service Advisor) at a local Chevrolet dealer to see if there are any grey-hairs left on staff.

I would say that for someone who knows what they're doing, has the proper tools, and can raise the car on a lift, the entire operation should not take longer than about 1 hour.

Thanks Joe. I figured about two hours. The driveshaft has to be dropped so why not replace the TH400 end seal as well.

I just did one off the car for a friend. Replaced the side yoke seals and Pinion seal in about an hour. Checked it before and after with a dial TW.
Use SKF/CR seals and be sure they use #2 or equvilent on the splines. #271 red on the nut and I stake the nuts as well.
Granted on the car may take longer and you won't get the side yoke seals done.

Thanks Gary. I saw your video at DC; very thorough. Yes, this will be on the car so I am thinking at least a couple of hours. And since the driveshaft is down I might as well do (or have done) the TH400 rear seal and u-joints. Would NAPA be a source of SKF or similar quality parts?
