What is the board suppose to look like in the area where the trunk latch is fastened. Mine has a crude square cut out, but then someone appears to have taken a saw and cut off the bottom 2 inches; straight across from left to right. Anyone have a photo to post of a correct board?

Re: 1960 Spare Tire Board
Here is a restored original '60 board. http://ckautollc.phanfare.com/212103...geID=113481222
Hope this helps. Notches can be crudely cut, especially on boards with RPO wider wheels.- Top

Re: 1960 Spare Tire Board
I noticed the restored original board has a knot plug. I thought the boards did not have plugs on the top side. Thanks for the web photos. I still need to see the entire cutout to see if it is symmetrical. An archives thread indicated that the cut out is 1.375" on the left and 2" on the right and 3.625" across the top.- Top

Re: 1960 Spare Tire Board
Here are some better photos of 2 different '58 trunk boards.
Comparision of reproduction to original side by side on '58
...and finally a trunk board from an unrestored '60

Re: 1960 Spare Tire Board
Chuck, the original '60 board is exactly what I wanted to see. Wish I had the exact dimensions of the cut out. I have a friend with a 1959 and one with a 1960; will take measurements of the cut outs from their boards. It looks like the cut out is basically the size of the knotch in the trunk mat.- Top

Re: 1960 Spare Tire Board
Joe,
I can measure a few of mine if you need me too. Also, I have an original board that came out of a '60 that has a larger, rough cut notch. I initiallythought that bubba had gotten to it but later was told that it was probably from an RPO car with wider wheels. The wider wheel raises the board in the trunk requiring additional clearance to be cut to clear the lock mechanism. I can also take some shots and measurements of that if necessary. Let me know.
I'm no trunk board expert but I have seen several original boards and have observed that the notch is often not an exact cut on many original boards. They certainly weren't laser cut.
I have a '60 with moatly original parts and an unrestored trunk board. You can see that the notch is not squarely cut. Original labels are intact. Car has less than 30k miles.

Re: 1960 Spare Tire Board
Hi Troy,
By the way, thanks for the '54 battery leads, etc. We replaced the AK mat with one from Romeo which was a closer color and overall a better looking & better fitting mat. Less money also.

Re: 1960 Spare Tire Board
Chuck, thanks for the photos of your 1960 trunk. Looks like the cutout was the width of the trunk latch. If you have time, could you measure the length of the left and right cuts? thank you for your time.- Top

Re: 1960 Spare Tire Board
here are a couple of originals i have, interestingly enough one has the cat eye repairs and one doesn't, the opening measures 2" and 1 3/8" deep by 3 1/2 " wide on both of them, both are pretty tidy cuts with a slight radius at the junction of the 2 cutsAttached Files- Top

Re: 1960 Spare Tire Board
Thanks for the measurements and now I am ready to make a new tire board. I search all over Dallas, TX and could not find 5-ply 3/8" plywood, but since my car is a driver and numerous items are not original, I don't have a problem using a 3-ply reproduction. I will save the original board because it is in excellent condition except where Bubba hacked out and sawed out part of the bottom of the board.
Can someone go through the process of uploading photos to a thread?- Top
