I'm researching OBD II scan tools. Do any of you out there have an OBD II scan tool? If so, what brand and model is it and how do you like it?

Re: OBD II Scan Tool
I bought an Innova Equus model 3140 via Amazon and couldn't be happier with it. It has more than paid for itself several times over. OBD I and II capable. The best ones Sears sells look an awful lot like it by the way. Regards, Jim- Top

Re: OBD II Scan Tool
I have an AutoXray EZ-Scan 6000 kit, with OBD I and OBD II adapters, cables, etc., for use on GM, Ford and Chrysler vehicles. I bought it about 3 years ago, for around $295 including shipping. It is a hand held unit, no need for a laptop computer. The EZ-Scan 6000, works fine, for my use, also upgradeable. The website is www.autoxray.com.
I also have an older Snap-On MT2500, with OBD I & OBD II adapters. I have been using one since about 1983-84. But, it will only read Generic codes, after 2001, not the manufacturer specific codes. You would need to buy a newer Snap-On model (more $$$) to read the manufacturer specific codes from 2002 to present. That is the main resaon I bought the AutoXray kit, as they are similar, in most functions, but not all.
Hope this helps. Dave- Top

Re: OBD II Scan Tool
Joe,
I bought the Actron CP9180 when I had some issues with my C6 transmission. I recall it was around $125 on sale at Auto Zone, about a year ago. I've used it several times and it's a good tool. Also used on some friends C5's. It doesn't have all of the features of the fancier more expensive units, but does the job for me.

Re: OBD II Scan Tool
Joe I bought a ACTRON CP9180 AutoScanner Plus last year when I discovered it was on sale at Advance Auto. There are so many of these tools to choose from with a lot of features.
This OBD II tool comes with the attachments to connect it to a laptop computer.
Have only used it twice for a check engine lights on two different cars. For a car with 4 oxygen sensors it indicated which one.
Tool has been easy to use for the check engine lights and I like it.- Top

Re: OBD II Scan Tool
Joe,
I have an AutoXray EZ-Scan 6000 kit, with OBD II adapters, cables, etc., The 6000 cost about $300. I also have an earlier OBD I version of AutoXray which I use on my 1995 and earlier cars. I think that cost $100 back when I got it many moons ago.
I haven't tried the 6000 on the 2008 Corvette which has the CAN system, and I do not know if the 6000 is upgradeable. I have access to the latest Snap-on scan tools at school and we have a TECH II there as well, but again I am not sure if they are CAN compatible. I believe the TECH II has not been upgraded, but the Snap-on tools are brand new, so I expect they are CAN inclusive. Good news is I have not yet had reason to find out.
The electronic systems on automobiles are changing so rapidly that it is difficult and expensive to keep up. Doubly so for us amateurs.Terry- Top

Re: OBD II Scan Tool
I bought an Auto Tap AT123 in 2002. We use it almost every week, and it's been a good tool. I was told when I bought it that Ford was using this tool and software in thier dealships, but I'm not sure about that. The best part about the tool is the online support. Every time we mess it up or have some problems, they get us up and running in an hour or so. The only down side is the age of the tool, and many of the newer software upgrades from B&B aren't applicable.- Top

Re: OBD II Scan Tool
I've had a few and it's simply a matter of doing a Google search and buying on price/feature content, Joe. You can get a DARN decent piece of gear from Taiwan/Hong Kong for roughly $80. You just have to look in the mirror and ask yourself what you want to do with the scanner?
If it's simply a mission of read & clear fault codes, those guys can fall into the $30 range. If you want a bit more in terms of feature/functions (upgrade the firmware, translate fault codes into English, scan a running engine, or beyond that, go for a test drive and record event history), you step up in price.
My $80 unit does the basic read/clear error code function, and it translates codes into English. It accepts download firmware updates and has a LIMITED repertoire of running engine analysis.
You can pay BEND OVER prices to guys like Snap On and this is one area where you CAN get bargain prices on el cheapo foreign made gear... A computer is a computer so there's just not that much difference that can be created at the basic low end level...- Top
