Third Edition JG on pg 29, 1st paragraph describes the bezels for the controls as "satin finish chrome" - every time I mentally try to transcribe this description into something I can understand, my result =s aluminum! Can someone describe "satin finish chrome"?
I can see the plater now, reaching for his shotgun when I walk into his shop and request "satin finish chrome".......

Just buy some repo's. They are the exact finish as the originals.

I always prefer to restore original parts rather than buy reproductions. That, to me, is what preserving, and restoring older cars is about.
Loren, I am sorry that I don't have an answer for you, but mine just look like dull chrome, but that is probably because they are old/original.

Borrow a reproduction and take it in hand to the plater and say: "Make the finish like this."

That's admirable but why pay a plater to try to match an original finish when you can buy a repo. that is indistinguishable from an original for a fraction of the cost? That just doesn't make sense.

I would suggest a phone call to a reputable plater, it will save both time and ammunition Explain to them what you are trying to accomplish and if there is such thing as satin finish chrome, they will surely know of it. If it does not exist then someone needs to explain/clarify the JG.

Loren -- here's an example on the bezel for the '63 (?)-65 radio on-off/tone/vol knob. Bought these at an outdoor swap in the Dallas/FW area in early '80s. 5th edition of '65 TIM&JG calls for "aluminum tone control knob.... with satin finish" I can't believe it's aluminum because of the weight.

P.S. if it get's any colder up here (-22F, or -30C a few mornings ago) you might end up with another neighbor.

I don't know that this is "the" answer, as I actually know very little about plated finishes, but here is a quick story about handgun finishes...

There is a finish commonly known as "hard chrome", that is a kind of satin type plated finish. Used on some semiautomatic handgun frames where corrosion resistance is needed.

You might discuss the possibility of hard chrome plating with a plating shop as a possible option. Perhaps a plater could show you an example.
