    70 console tab repair

The good news is that I sent the radio to Jerry R. for repair, it is back in and sounds fabulous.

The bad news is that two of the ears where the shift plate attaches to the console need to be repaired. They were cracked before and taking it apart one more time did the final deed.

If I cut a piece of fiberglas out of an old tire tub and shape it, will the bonding material hold the new piece securely.

I know they make a repair kit, but it requires me to remove the console and I prefer to make the repair in place if feasible.

    Thanks!

I have used a fiberglass repair kit available in auto parts stores to make this repair. All you need is the cloth and resin from the kit to build up new tabs. Stronger and better than new.

      Thanks Joe.

I have a scrap piece of fiberglas that I am going to cut and shape. Then I will scuff up the underside of the plastic in the console. Then I will use bonding material and use a clamp to hold the pieces together on the console.

I am pretty sure it will be stronger then it was new.

For some reason, the original tabs were very brittle and broke easily. This was definitely not an age-induced situation, either, as mine broke when my car was VERY young.
