    Couple questions on judging

Hi, New member here. I have a Tech Info Manual and judging guide, but did not see my questions addressed there.

I recently acquired a '72 coupe, and though I am not going to be doing a body-off-frame complete resto on the car, I want to make it/keep it as original as possible within reason, based on economic considerations, or simple tradeoffs for drivability. I may even have it judged so I will find out everything that is wrong with the car.

Question: If a part is not original, do you lose all condition points also?

Case in point, the replacement Q-jet carb on my car is similar to the one it came with , but wrong numbers for the car. Do I lose all carb originality points, or just some originality points since it is still a Q-Jet, and not a Demon carb, or something? If the condition is still excellent, could you receive 100% of condition points even if it the wrong carb?

Question: What about service replacement parts? I see a Q Jet was offered as a service replacement for my car, PN 17054927. How are correct service replacement carbs judged compared to a Q-Jet which in my case (17054928),seems to be for a 1973 350 truck?

All major components on my car are original, but a few things have been replaced with rebuilt, or service replacement components.

    Thanks,
    Doug

    Doug,

You only lose all condition points if you lose 90% or more of the originality points. Conversely, if you get at least 10% originality you can still score all of the condition points.

Your Q-jet would lose for the part number + the date, and may lose some other points based on items on the carb which deviate from original. But, you will likely garner a fair portion of your originality points if it at least "looks like" a 1972 carburetor would have appeared.

FYI, if you have a small block then a correct carb is not hard to find. They were used on all small block Chevys, not just Corvettes, so examples of them are relatively common.

For service replacement parts they are judged just like any other part - configuration, completeness, date code, installation and finish.

      Doug -

The other must-have manual you need if you're thinking about judging is the "Corvette Judging Reference Manual", 8th Edition, available from the NCRS on-line store (NCRS Store item in the blue bar at the top of the page). Among other things, it explains the judging and scoring systems in detail, standard deductions, etc.
