1978 Pace car with 8,000 miles - Value?

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum and am currently looking at a 1978 Pace Car, 4 spd with 8,000 miles. It's at a dealership and they do not have any history on it.

I have ordered the black book for values but I would apprciate anyones actual sales prices. I am going to verify numbers matching when I get there.

    Thanks,

    Frank

NADA Classic car guide shows $27900 and $31400 w/L82 on the HIGH end. But as I say a car/home is only worth what some fool will give for them. Always try to barter a little.

      Frank,

The '78 pace cars are a bit of an anomaly in pricing of Corvettes- Tom Russo is very experienced on the subject and I'm sure will be along shortly.

The 'high dollar' PCs are the ones that have never been plated or display only delivery miles. More often than not they're being sold by the first or second owner who have become tired of waiting for the car to be worth what they paid for them many years ago. A buyer of one of these now takes on the burden of keeping the car OFF the road to preserve history and value, or choose to drive it (and to heck with the 'investment') but now has to deal with maintenance issues brought on by 33 years of static storage. There's a surprisingly high number of these cars around

The other end of the scale are the cars with typical miles for a three decade old Corvette - all things being equal, the PC option might raise the value by a few thousand dollars.

In the middle is what you've found- a car that's been driven only rarely, but cannot command the dollars of the first group above. If the engine and transmission options are what you want, and presuming it's a genuine PC (this is encoded into the VIN) the physical condition and completeness will now dictate value.

I think you might have found the most desirable 'class' of PC if your intention is to drive it or drive/show.

      Value? Maybe low 20s.

If they have no history & not all of the paper work run like the wind. For Gods sake can a 78 8000 MI. Corvette have no history or paperwork. I am smelling something fishy here. Just my 2cents & that is all it is worth. Good Luck

          Hi Ken,
The dealer purchased it at an auction. I'm going to do a little more digging and see if I can get a copy of the title from the dealer purchase.
Thanks for everyones quick response and I am open to more comments.

OK, I now have the story. The dealer tells me that it was rolled by a young man that got it from his Dad. It was rebuilt with a new front end and taken to auction. It's not the car for me. Thanks very much for everyones reply.

            Thanks,

            Frank

At the Mecum auction in Orlando this past January a Pace Car, from what I heard sold for $39k. According to a former Pace Car owner of low-mileage Pace Cars who looked at it, this one was missing details typical of an original Pace Car. But someone got some nice $ for it. I'm wondering if it was the same one in which case anything over $16-22 is probably too high!

According to the latest Corvette Mag, it appears as though the 78 PC has taken a dip this past year. You're smart to pass on this one.
