I purchased a 1960 Corvette in 1989. The red trunk mat has "56" in a small circle in the upper left hand corner and GM part number 3761486 molded into the top-center (towards the gas tank) of the mat. There are no other markings on the mat. The back side is black and it mirrors the front side vertical ridges. Were there reproduction trunk mats at least as far back as 1989? Or is this an OEM trunk mat?

Certainly there were trunk mat reproductions well before 1989. If you do a search in the tech board archives there is a wealth of information as to the characteristics of an original.Bill Clupper #618 -

Followup to original post. The 1958-1960 Tech Info & Judging Guide indicates that the red trunk mat for "1959 all & 60 w power top" is part number 376486; same number as on my mat. My VIN derivative is #1656, well before the part number change after #4700. If my trunk mat part number is correct, I can not figure out why there is a "56" inside the date circle in the upper left hand corner and no "US" in the other corner.Comment

the mats al knoch and otherssold in the 80's and 90's all had 56 within a circle. the # can be changed.its the date the mold was construcdted.mikeComment
