C-3 4 spd.transmission gremlin

Today I rolled my 71 out of the garage (dead battery, not run for awhile) to do some cleaning and light maintenance. (Battery replacement). The key was difficult to remove so I manually pulled up on the lockout cable and the key was easily removed. After replacing the battery, the car fired right up but when I tried to put it into ANY gear, it would not move and the engine seemed to stall while attempting this. HOWEVER, when putting the shifter in neutral, the car wanted to go in reverse. I sense that there is a fix, but not a quick fix. Any help would be appreciated.

David I would first check the lockout cable at both ends to see if the cable is bent. It also sounds that your shifter linkage become jammed or your trans is in 2 gears at the same time. You will have to get under the car and make sure the shifting levers are all in neutral they may have to be preyed with a bar to do this. Let us know how things go with your problem.

The "two gears at once" scenario seems to have been the culprit. Initially I had crawled under the car and tried to position the linkage by hand with negative results. (I was afraid to put too much of the "bigger hammer" method to work too soon.) But, the pry bar did the trick. Thanks for your input.
