    1984 Mufflers

I do not like the turn down tailpipes that were installed on the 1984 Corvettes. Since my mufflers need replacing I am considering using the KBD Targa Mufflers which will exit straight out the back instead of pointing toward the ground. My concern is how loud they might be, but I do not mind a little more exhaust sound. My car has a cat. converter which should help keep the noise down some. Does anyone have any experience with these mufflers? Any advice or comments will be welcome. Thanks!

Thomas I have a 1985 Corvette with original mufflers. The outlets do not point to the ground. Each muffler has two outlets on each muffler and only one outlet is actually functional. I will have to look at my pictures of the new 1984 Corvette in Corvette News to see how the original pipes were shown. I do not think they pointed to the ground.

The exhaust tips on 1984 Corvettes did turn downward rather than existing straight out like later models.

I do recall that the 1984 muffler aft pipes did have a downward bend to them that was one of the quick visual cue to tell an 84 to my wife's new 85 at that time.

Here is a photo of early C4 mufflers. They do turn down slightly.

Here's a couple pictures of my 1984 original GM right side muffler(GM part # 14060156) from my 1984 Corvette(June 1984 build). I removed them because I thought they looked terrible and ordered from GM the factory style 1985 Corvette mufflers 3 months later and put them on my 1984 Corvette. The 1984 Corvette mufflers have no black out paint as did the 1985 style muffler. The 1985 mufflers came half blacked out from the factory and from the GM parts department back in the day. I completely painted my 1985 mufflers black before I put the on. Thought this might help the 84 muffler story. Save the Wave.>George

Sure helps me George, those 84 mufflers really point to the ground.
