65 corvette original fuel pump identification

I am looking for an original fuel pump for my 65 corvette. What numbers should I look for and what other details are necessary.

It is a 327 365HP engine coupe. Transistor ignition. No air conditioning.

You need an AC type 40083 pump. This number will be stamped on the flange. The pump is a screw type (i.e. rebuildable) pump. Over the years, however, there were some variations in this pump so you need one of the configuration used in 1965. I believe there has been very much discussion on the 40083 pump and you should find ample details in the archives.

Is it correct for me to have a 40083 with also the number 4656 for my 65 corvette 327 365HP? I do not want a 4657 right?

Re: 65 corvette original fuel pump identification

As Joe said, 40083 is the pump for your car.

It is also my belief that if you really want to be truly correct you also need one that is correctly date coded for your car starting in 1965. Fuel pumps on 1964 models were not date coded with a stamped number on the flange (example: "40083"). There are a lot of restorers that do not want to believe this because it makes it almost impossible to find a correctly dated AC fuel pump for their car. A lot of vendors selling rebuilt AC pumps also do not want to believe this because it restricts the applications caused by the date code. There is a thread or 2 about fuel pump date codes if you are interested.

Here is an excerpt from one of my posts in an old thread:
I have studied and collected AC fuel pumps for the last 25 years and I believe the letters indicated a date code of some sort. In the very early 1980's I removed an AC 4657 fuel pump off a 1966 Chevrolet 327 engine assembled in May 1966. The fuel pump had a "66" casting with 3 radial line segments (indicating March 1966) on it as well as stamped "4657EF" ("E" = May? , "F" = 1966?). I've also had many other used and NOS AC 4657 fuel pumps (GM part # 5621665) as well as a NOS 6842 Chevrolet 409 fuel pumps (GM part # 5621887) over the years. Here are a few examples:

              "65" casting with 10 radial line segments (Oct. 1965) and stamped "4657KE" ("K" =Oct.?, "E" = 1965?)

"66" casting with 5 radial segments (May 1966) and stamped "4657GF"
              ("G" = July?, "E" = 1966?)

"64" casting with 2 line segments (Feb. 1964) and stamped "4657"

              "65" casting, stamped "6842KE" ("K" = Oct.?, "E" = 1965?)

              NOS "DI 40658" non-rebuildable AC pump used on 1968-1969 Corvettes (GM #6417337) where the "D" = April?, the "I" = 1969?

Years ago I talked with someone from Goat Hill Classics at the Carlisle, PA, swap meet about AC fuel pump dating and he did not believe that AC fuel pumps have date codes BUT he was in the business of selling vintage rebuilt AC fuel pumps so date coding could possibly limit the sale of his vintage AC pumps.

Put more bluntly, he knows what the codes mean, got the original equipment and process, but isn't saying because he and the kids are in the business to sell pumps.

Maybe they were cell or line related and did not specifically have a date format.

One way to tell if there is anything to this is to get vintage parts in boxes - the box suppliers used date codes that are easier to figure out.

                  Ron,

By "he" I assume you mean Goat Hill.

Back In the 1980's I had 3 or 4 NOS 4567 AC pumps where the date codes on the pumps (mostly in 1966) matched up with the date codes on the original AC boxes.

                    Dave - yes.

More data from 66 - 70 would help show what those meant and break this wide open, I know a year or so back we did not have a final theory that all known parts fit.

Would not necesarily need to be Corvette pumps, just box dates and part dates - if the parts were made in Flint.

                      Ron,

The NOS 4657 AC fuel pumps that I had are long gone. I wish that I would have recorded the date codes on the boxes before I sold them. I only recorded the stamped codes and 2-digit casting years on the actual pumps. It really does not matter to me what others think about date codes on AC fuel pumps. I'm getting sick of talking to a "wall".

The original pump for '65 #23561 is still with the car; it is INTERNALLY dated May/June 1965 and is stamped ONLY with 40083, no "supposed date code letters".

is that pump a rebuildable unit that is screwed together, or like the later units crimped for life?

ALL AC type 40083 are screw-type pumps. If it's a crimped type, then it cannot be a 40083.
