What is the correct power steering cap with dipstick for a 1966 vette with a build date of Dec. 15 1965? I see two different dipsticks, one has a flat metal dipstick, and the other is a black round plastic dipstick.Which type would be correct for my car? Thanks for any info. Larry.....

The correct piece for your car is a METAL cap with a smooth perimeter. Caps with a "scalloped" perimeter are plastic and were not used for 1966.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1966 Power steering dipstick
Hi Joe
I meant the dipstick part that goes in the oil. I have two PS dipsticks, both have the same metal cap. one has a flat metal dipstick on it , the other has a round black plastic dipstick on it. Thanks Larry....- Top

This one was a junkyard take-off from a mid-60's GM.Attached Files- Top

Re: 1966 Power steering dipstick
Joe --- like this ? .... only the cap should be painted black, at least per the '65 TIM&JG. Reading the repop catalogs, it mentions "round" and "plastic" and "replacement", but I was thinking maybe they were referring to the dipstick itself.

Yes, this looks like the one I'm referring to. It was used from 1963 to about 1968.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1966 Power steering dipstick
I've never seen a Corvette power steering cap with a flat metal dipstick---only round plastic. Maybe some were flat metal but, if so, I've never come across a known original of that type.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1966 Power steering dipstick
I think the dipstick portion on my 63 steering pump is flat steel. I always thought the plastic started aroung mid sixties..- Top

Re: 1966 Power steering dipstick
I don't know if this part number info will be helpful or not:
5691158 PS Pump Asm, (63 and early 64) original capstick asm was 5688258.
Drawing was updated with new cap 5690846 on 5/22/63
So the above two caps were used during 1963 and 64 production.
Drawing was updated with new capstick 7803820 on 5/20/69 this was an updated capstick for service.
5692842 PS Pump Asm, (Late 64) original capstick asm was 5690846. This would have been the production capstick.
Drawing updated with new capstick 7803820 on 5/21/69.
5698078 PS Pump Asm, (67, 68, Early 69) original was 5690846 capstick.
Drawing was updated with new capstick 7803820 on 4/18/68.
So these 5690846 capstick was used during 67 and 68. 7803820 was most likely early 69 production or possibly introduced very late 68.
5696999 PS Pump Asm, (65, 66 with spec hi performance) original capstick was 5690846. Drawing never updated.
The bad news is that I do not have a drawing or picture of the 5688258 capstick. If I was to guess, I would think that this one is the capstick with the metal stick.
5690846 capstick appears to have a stamped metal smooth cap with a plastic stick. There is some type of conical piece where the stick meets the cap.
7803820 capstick was plastic. It had a serrated OD cap, with a conical spring on the underside that held the rubber seal in place. It was used on all Corvette reservoirs thru 1982 production.
Hope that this helps,

Jim------
The GM #5688258 was discontinued from SERVICE in January, 1963 and replaced by the GM #5690846. I would expect that the PRODUCTION change from the 5688258 to the 5690846 would have occurred prior to that time but that's just a "guesstimate" on my part.
However, the 5688258 was also used on 1960-E63 passenger car power steering pumps so it was around for a while before it was ever used on a Corvette pump.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
