In helping a friend redo some items in the engine bay it was uncovered after bead blasting the hood hinges they were a yellowish gold cad appearance. Several other related items were the usual zinc type appearance. In order to the document this process what should the final finish appear as even though it will be covered to some extent with engine black-out. The car was a very nice Horizon Blue repaint many years ago.

Re: C-1 Hood hinge Replating-Finish issue
I went back in archives past page 40 and didn't see anything either on finishes. Could this be a short run occurance IF from a factory supplier?
In this instance it seemed to nice to a have been a body shop/older restoration issue.- Top

Re: C-1 Hood hinge Replating-Finish issue
There are other parts that are gold cad that do not show up as such in the judging guide, such as the washer nuts for the decklid latches, and the hardware for the decklid latch. So it is entirely possible IMO, but that's the first I heard of it.- Top

Re: C-1 Hood hinge Replating-Finish issue
Tom,
My original hood hinges were gold cad and my male latches were also.
Regarding zinc, zinc has a distinct blue cast, whereas regular cad is silver white. Although zinc is acceptable, from what I've seen, cad was used a lot more than zinc on these cars.
I'd be careful bead blasting with anything that would pit them. If you replate them, you won't need to bead blast the paint anyway as the process will remove all that. These items were blacked out, but the areas behind can be seen. Also, with an original smooth finish, some of the blackout will eventually chip off showing the gold. If blasted, the paint will stick a lot longer, though.
