    '69 Steering orientation

Hello all. I have read in several posts that there is a mark on the shaft that comes out of the steering box that indicates the centered position. I have the rag joint off my '69 and the steering column out of the car and I can't see any marks anywhere. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place? Any help will be appreciated.

Check your Chassis Service Manual, Section 9, page 9-2, Figure 4. The diagram shows a longitudinal mark on the shaft about two inches from the worm bearing adjuster...actual results may vary.

      Chuck,
Thanks for the response. I found the diagram you referred me to and I will check the car again tomorrow. I cleaned the shaft and looked for something today but did not see anything in that area.

        Chuck,
The marks you are referring to are scribe marks that you would put on when taking the rag joint off so you could put it back in the same position. They are not factory alignment marks. I found no marks anywhere so I used a 10 ft. straight edge up against the rear wheels and used it to be certain that front wheels are straight. Now I can put the lower flange on with the split at 12 O'clock and it will be llned up. Thanks for the response.

Nah...This is not theoretical knowledge based on reading the service manual; this is practical knowledge based on experience...I've found the mark on Chevrolet steering gears. I can't explain why yours doesn't have the mark, but the important thing is you got your steering adjusted properly.

            Chuck,
I stand corrected. I did not find any marks and, in reading further in the steering section, I saw instructions on scribing the parts to assure proper alignment and figured that was what they were in the figure you pointed out.
