    1971 LS5 Convertible

I spent yesterday at a speciality dealer here in town looking over his C3 inventory and one of the cars that caught my eye was a 1971 convertible with the LS5 454/365. Ran well and looked like it had good potential but was really tired. Someone had changed the color from Brands Hatch Green to black and the green vinyl interior to black. A/C was present but not running. Car is an automatic numbers matching.

Can anyone give me a market value for restored versions of this car? I couldn't spot a similar one in the last Driveline. I'm trying to figure out whether or not the numbers would work given the asking price.

    Thanks,

    Glen

71 LS5 convertibles that are correct, high quality drivers are in the $30,000 to $40,000 range. You will need to get that one cheap to address the paint, interior and general condition issues you described. The automatic detracts a bit as well.

Glen, check out the "sales" sites. I listed many of them in Post #2 of this thread:

Thanks Paul. They are asking right at 27K. I had a strong feeling that that was too high given the amount of work needed. They didn't seem to be very flexible either.

If you want the car, go back next week and point out some of the problems, even if you mentioned them before, and then leave. Be nice. Then go back the following week and do it again. The object is to get him to invest a lot of time with you. That'll soften him up. If he does'nt wholesale it or otherwise move it in three weeks he'll eventually give you his bottom dollar price, which you want to make an offer below that. However, be prepared to walk away, which may end up being the case anyway because if you use Paul H's estimate, you need to get the car at around $20k or below to keep from going upside down.
