    1/2 shaft thickness

Anyone know for sure what the tube thickness is? I've heard anywhere from 083- 095". I have a old 67 1/2 shaft I will cut in 1/2 and measure but I've never found this info.
    Thanks
    Gary

Gary, do you live near any refineries or chemical plants?

If you do, there is probably at least one inspection contractor in town that might be willing to measure the thickness ultrasonically for you. Ultrasonic instruments are used to non-destructively measure piping and vessel wall thickness quite accurately.

They apply a little gel, press the sensor against the surface, and presto, you know the thickness. It'll save having to destroy the halfshaft...of course, this assumes it's not already junk.

Thanks Chuck good idea but I don't know anyone I could ask to check it. The shaft I have is no good, badly pitted yoke ends so it's not a problem to cut it. I just want to know what the tube size was that was used on the 63-82's to compare to the aftermarket shafts.

I don't think that the tube thickness is the same for all 1963-82. I believe the 63-74 2-1/2" shafts are all the same. However, I think the 3" shafts first used for the 1975 model year have thinner tubes. However, I'm not sure of that. It would be nice to find out.

          Hi Joe,
I was hoping you or John H would know for sure. I just cut this 67 shaft and the tube wall is .130" Which was a surprise to me, I could have swore they were under .100". I know the new aftermarkets range from 083, 095, to the 3.5's I use at .134" I'll post a picture when I get a chance. I don't think I have any junk 3" shafts to check those.
          Thanks
          Gary

I would think that the .083 DOM tubing would be easier to balance, and more than adequate for anything with street tires.
