    NOS 66-67 frt exhaust pipes

I have a pair of NOS frt exhaust pipes part number 334926 and 3877209. The older part number has the original style crimps in the bends while number 3877209 has smooth bends. Is it a case of the one side had smooth bends originally or is it that the smooth pipe is a later service replacement part? These pipes are 2 inch going into 2-1/2 for a 4spd car. thanks for any help.

Russ, if no one else speaks up, I can tell you about another NCRS member who has done extensive research on NOS C2 and C3 exhaust piees, etc.
Fellow member Grant Wong, who is registered on the TDB site.

I've heard him mention minor differences in the bends before, but I can't remember what his findings were.

        Russ------

The GM #334926 is the later SERVICE piece. It dates from about 1973. The 3877209 is a 1966-67 era part number.

Joe, How do these part numbers work? I thought the numerically smaller number was an older number (7 digit vs 8 digit)

In general it works the way you surmise. However, as are most general rules, there are exceptions.

In the early 70's Chevrolet was running out of 7 digit parts numbers. When they got to 3999999, they were out of 7 digit numbers assigned to Chevrolet. The system was not ready yet for 8 digit numbers. So, an effort was made to go back through the assigned GM part numbers and "salvage" any unused blocks of part numbers if they could be found. They were found and these included the 6 digit 3XXXXX and 4XXXXX series as well as the 7 digit 62XXXXX series. So, starting in the late 1972 period, these began to be used across all of the Chevrolet car lines. They were assigned until about 1979 when the first 8 digit Chevrolet part number was released, GM #14000000.
