    C1 (1960) brake parts help

I am trying to put my chassis back together after restoration of all parts. I have a couple of question about the park (emergency) brake parts and how they should go together. I have the ST-12 and the 61 Passenger Car Shop Manual, but neither has a good exploded view of parts for the rear brakes.

The first picture is of the right rear secondary shoe with the park brake lever as removed from the car. Note that there is a spring type washer under the C clip. On the Left shoe, the spring clip was between the shoe and lever instead of on top of the shoe under the C clip.

Which is the correct location for the spring washer?

I bought new shoes and hardware kit from NAPA. The second picture shows parts on the left from NAPA and on the right is the C clip and spring washer off the car. The C clip from the NAPA kit is much smaller then the C clip off the car. There is no spring clip in the NAPA kit, but there is the other part just above the C clip. I will reused my old C clips and spring washers.

What is the other part for that came in the NAPA kit?

I assume this kit is for multiple years of Chevys and this part is just for some other year model. By the way, I looked at pictures of the hardware kit at Paragon and theirs has the same parts.

    Thanks,
    Don

Don, You're so right. None of the SM's show the Park Brake lever setup. The 58,59,60,61,62 manuals do not show the orientation.......

I always put the spring washer on the lever first, then insert the lever into the shoe, then attach the clip, or in some cases, a "horseshoe" clip which gets squeezed around the pin. Recent AC Delco service replacement kits for my '59 restoration use the horseshoe clips. see pic

I think the extra part in your kit, the spool shaped part, is for the pass car and 63 up Corvette brake self adjusting lever. It's a sleeve which you insert into the mating holes in the lever and the shoe that the hold down spring fits into. see pic...you can just make it out on the right hold down spring, just under the spring. I'm pretty sure that's it, but I don't do brakes everyday so I'm not positive.

      Thanks Rich,

      That confirms what I suspected.
