    Reverse Lockout Rod

My 1966 Corvette came without a reverse lockout rod installed in the shifter. I ordered a new reverse lockout rod but fail to see how this rod is attached to the T handle. There is no hole for a set screw to hold the rod. Can anyone help with the way the reverse lockout rod is attached to the T handle on my shifter.

    Thanks

The last 1/8 inch of the rod that sticks up through the T-handle is simply squeezed to a flat. The squeezed part becomes wider to prevent the rod from falling out.

      Barry,

You can order the T handle with or without a rod. Volunteer Vette supplies the industry with shifter parts. Part number SH022 for $22.00 is what you need. They can be reached at 1 865 521-9100 or www.volvette.com Also, they will be at Corvette Expo in March.

In 1964, and early '65s, IIRC, there were 2 designs in the reverse components. The T-handle had a threaded hole just below the chrome knob, in which a set screw retained the shifter rod (called cable) The rod was thin and the full thickness was only at the bottom end. Second design T-handle had no hole for set screw and the rod/cable was held in the T-handle by the method that John C. mentions. Also, the rod was now thicker from the bottom up to just under where it enters the T-handle. There used to be instructions from GM included with a new rod on how to adapt to the earlier design.

Found a pic showing difference between '64 to early (?) '65 shifter, and 2nd design reverse lock-out rods. Set screw and thin rod (except at bottom) and set-screw on T-handle, ... versus thick rod (the whole length, except at top) and NO set screw, on 65L (?)-up. The small hole easy to see if judged (just under knob); not mentioned in '65 TIM&JG, though.

I bought a GM reverse lockout rod from Doble Chevrolet back about 1980. Enclosed below are scans of the 2 instruction pages. You might need a magnifying glass to read these so I took pictures of them as well, just turn your head 90 degrees clockwise. I am not a computer wizard.

David -- this is how I remember the instructions for the early style. I see they're dated 1968.

Took your pics and rotated and fooled around with brightness/contrast/sharpness and here's what I got. Not many bytes to start with, though; could only get it slightly larger.

Thanks for posting; it takes me back.

                Wayne,

The sheet with all text is dated "4-19-68".
The sheet with the drawing is dated "5/23/67" (written by hand) just below the hand written "X901033" in the lower right hand corner. I'm not sure the meaning of the "X901033".
