    Spare Tire Tub

We're doing some freshening up on my 67 427 coupe. The tire tub has seen better days and I'd like to find a replacement in excellect condition. Does anyone know of a good source, other than ebay, to find a nice tub? Thanks.

I would check the NCRS Driveline first if looking for a replacement. The online version (link at top right corner of computer screen) makes it easy to search. If your tire tub is original to the car and/or has the correct date stamp for your car, your original can probably be restored if that's something you might be interested in.

I went through this same situation fifteen years ago. Purchased a NOS tub from a well known and expensive parts supplier that wasn't truly NOS, but a later GM replacement.

I recently had Scott Sinclair repair my old one, and I re-installed it on my car. Excellent job by Scott.

If you want new, suggest a Sermersheim's reproduction. Essentially identical to original, but a slight bit larger in inside diameter to accomodate the spare tire. Probably obtained when using an old original tub for the mold.

If if it is just cracked or small broken pieces of it are missing it is not that tough a repair job. I am not a fiberglass expert but I had pretty good results fixing the cracked lip and a small area was even missing some glass and I managed use basic fiberglass techniques with some Bonsal black dye mixed in with the resin. This is on a late 66 black fiberglass tub.

Larry, do you have a link, part number, contact information, etc for Sermersheim?

            Thanks

                Joe, thanks

Interesting, I just Googled them and it appears they do not have a WEB-SITE. I guess you just call them and talk about what you need, get a price and make a decision to buy or not?

From their July 2008 catalog, page 7, item 14 ("Spare Tire Tray") and item 15 ("Spare Tire Tub").

No website that I'm aware of. When I last called about a fan shroud ring extension in late November of 2010, the person there to talk with now is Lee. Most likely you will need to leave a message, and he will get back to you later that day or the next.

That is correct....no web site. But they do have small catalogs listing their products (at least they used to). They generally sell at the Corvette shows, and are a major supplier to many of the Corvette parts companies.

They are WELL RECOGNIZED and VERY WELL RESPECTED by the Corvette restorers for their fiberglass products.

                      You can buy with confidence.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Since my tub is dated to the car I think I'll try the repair route.

I am sure your original and date-correct tire tub will be glad to hear the good news

                            Harry,

I should have mentioned that it's possible to get a "bulk" discount if you and some other Corvette fanatics group your order together.
