    72 Vette power window motor

    At a standstill:
I have a 1972 Corvette coupe. The driver's window was lowered and wouldn't come back up. I removed the door panel and access plate and tapped on the motor, while working the switch up and down---"nothing". I unplugged the motor and used a volt/ohm meter, touching both leads on the wire (plug) while working the switch up and down and getting 12 volts in both directions. Is this telling me the motor is bad? The passenger side window works fine, the fuse is not blown. Does this eliminate the curcuit breaker, relay & switch?
By the window being down, the channel is up against the motor mounting bolts--not allowing me to remove the motor or lock the arm. Is there a trick to raising the window while stil connected to the motor (in the down position)? Is there a manual on changing motor or any suggestions? Thanks,
    Carl

    Carl -

Power window motor troubleshooting and the procedure for locking the power regulator prior to removal is covered in the "Corvette Body" section of the Chassis Service Manual.

Carl, I think the next step is to run a external ground wire to motor and try the switch again. (cut a piece of wire with a couple of aligator clips)

Sounds like the switch is fine, amd wires that power the motor up and down. so all thats left is the checking of the ground. If the ground doesn.t help, head for the motor and connector that plugs in motor and make sure the brass connectors haven't corroded or heated up.

When i hooked up my volt meter, I grounded right to the motor and used the other clip on the feed wire connectors, moving the switch in both directions getting my 12 volts. I would think that this is telling me the motor is grounded- YES? Thanks, Carl

Carl, yes that woud tell you theres a ground there. what about the connections where the plug into motor ? Also try to plug motor back in and wiggle the connector around, Just be careful in case the motor does work they move fast. maybe just jog the switch quickly.

I just tried that and NO GO. Iam saying the motor is shot. So now I just have to figure out how to remove it. Thanks for your suggestions, Carl

Just a sort of "heads up" regarding the motor. The power window motor on my '71 quite as well. I bought a replacement motor and installed it but kept the original motor for several years. One day, when I got curious about the motor, I took it apart and discovered the brushes were shot. I got some new brushes and installed them and now the motor works like new. So, don't toss your old motor - it can probably be rebuilt!

PS: Can't help you on removing the motor. My window was in such a position that I could remove my motor without having to do any "tricks"!
