    1965 Corvette Body Panels

Just curious if you get deductions if your body panels are slightly off. All of my panels line up except for my drivers side door on my coupe is slightly off and not completely flush as my passenger side door is. Did these Corvettes come from the factory slightly off and not as perfect as today's cars body panels with stricter tolerances and quality controls in place?

Not only were the original panels way off, the paint looked like it was applied by Stevie Wonder.

When I toured the St. Louis plant in June of 1965, I remember a guy with a air rotary grinder at the upper back of a driver coupe door. He was grinding off the door lip to get the "proper" gap between door and body panels. Talk about prefect fit! Fiberglass was flying everywhere. I recall my 65 coupe doors along the top never lined up with the car top. Coupe door tops were never made perfect to start with.

However - do expect to loose some points for not having a correct fit!

Yes, I lost points for the lower rear edges of my 65's doors not being flush with the rear body panel the first time it was judged. I asked the judges what degree of fit I should be striving for and they turned to the car next to me (an FI convertible also built in St. Louis that just happened to be within 25 units of my BB's VIN) and both judges FROZE.

The looked like proverbial deer in the car's headlight. Why? The FI car (which had NOT been judged yet) was almost IDENTICAL to my car in terms of JUST the lower rear edges of the doors sticking out from the car's rear panels...

Once, the two exterior judges 'recovered' from their deer/headlight stances, they gave me back the originality points they'd deducted and scratched their heads mumbling something along the lines of, "I learn something new at each meet I work..."
