    Brake Grinding Sound When Stopping

Hi everyone. Last weekend I took the 70 out and shortly into the trip I noticed a grinding sound from the front passenger side wheel when I applied the brakes, and only just before I came to a stop.

I took that wheel off and everything looked fine on the outer side. But I did notice on the inboard side of the brake rotor there are three circular scrapes marks. See picture, near edge of dust shield.

The calipers and the metallic pads are only a few years old. Any ideas? Thanks

I think it is highly likely you had a large contaminent (pebble or small rock) kicked up and lodged between the face of the pad and rotor which caused the marks before finally being ejected.

I'd remove the pads and inspect them. This is very easy to do. If you don't notice any problem with the pads, then look closer to see if there is some other sort of "interference" like, possibly, a bent caliper bracket or shield. With the pads removed, you should be able to discern any problem easily.

Thanks for the responses Rick and Joe. I think as Joe suggests the most prudent thing to do would be to explore a bit more just in case there is a structural interference that suddenly popped up. I appreciate the suggestions.

Pat, take a look at the wheel brg. for excessive play it may be that one of the bracket bolts may be rubbing the rotor, its appears that in the pic. that lower bolt is in that area.

Although it is easy to remove the inboard pad, this would give you a very good visual inspection of the metallic pad. Another option is to insert a putty knife between the inboard pad and disc to see if it dislodges anything.

looks like a rivet let loose on the pad.
