What % of home restores make top flight

What would you say the % of people that restore there car at home make Top Flight the first time or ever.

Re: What % of home restores make top flight

I would say the percentage is high for individuals actually determined to Top Flight.

On the other hand, there are thousands of cars being restored at home that will never get close to a Top Flight, but the owners have no intention of having the car judged. Many don't even know the NCRS exists.

So in the BIG picture, I'd say a very slight number of home restos ever make Top Flight.

There is no scientific basis to my post or comment. Just my personal opinion !

Wow Tom. I had to read all the way to the end to find the disclaimer. All that time I was wondering how you knew.

Terry, no one is keeping track so anyone who offers you information is just giving you their opinion -- and you know what they say about opinions especially on the Internet.

Well of the 5 people I know who got Top Flight, 3 did it themselves, ie at home. Know 1 did it first time and I also did it first time. Know another individual who is doing a 66 at home & bet its already at Top Flight however will not show until 2012 if I continue to push him.

            Just another unscientific comment!

I would suspect the percentage of those doing this at home with the intent of capturing top flight will be sucessful. After all, the labor is cheap and time isn't an issue.

I plan to nail it the first time out......someday

Exactly. I'll bet everybody who restores thier own car at home eventually gets Top Flight if they want it bad enough.

By restore I mean under NCRS guidelines.

Terry, I restored a 70 big block convertible except for the paint and installing the top. It was a 5 year project and I enjoyed it very much. It got a Top Flight first time out at a chapter meet and then it got a Top Flight at the 2010 Florida Regional. I hope you enjoy your restoration as I did.

I know of one member (SC) that's about to earn his Duntov with a home grown car!

Terry, I took a 63 SWC from ten years in a field with the rear windows ,hood, air cleaner and drivers door stolen and left uncovered. Only the frame was taken out for sand blast and allignment check. Just fourteen years later it received a Top Flight on it's first judging. It also received PV on the first try and a Duntov on the first attempt. Then I parked it for good. Just do it!

Regardless of what the goal is, I think those that do their own work are more successful and happier with the finished product than those that are "checkbook" builders". Nobody cares about YOUR car as much as YOU do.

And lastly, when someone asks who did the work, you can say "I did". (yes meaning you, not me.. lol)

                              Nothing better than that..
