    Wiper Arm Splined Shaft Sealer

I'm getting ready to reinstall my windshield wiper linkage and wiper arm rotating splined shafts back into my '65. What type of sealer is used at the firewall to seal these where they protrude through the firewall? Will 3M strip caulk make them leak tight? (See circled area in the attached picture)

Also these items were installed when the blackout was perfromed. Was there a boot or cover over the shaft splines to keep paint off the splines? If so how muck of the splined shaft was/is supposed to be unpainted?

    Thanks,

    James West

I never actually had to remove my wiper mechanisms but I would bed them with the 3 m caulk when reinstalling. But my wiper pivots were also hit with asphalt sealer from the outside around the base of the shaft and around the screws protruding into the cowl. This was similar to the sealer that was sprayed around most of the fasteners and heater that where on the dash (firewall). Not sure how far up the shaft the blackout came. (AOS Body)

      James -

The wiper transmissions were installed on the Hard Trim Line, well after the Paint Shop; they weren't present during the body blackout process. From '63 to mid-'66, they were received painted black from the supplier. From mid-'66 through '67, they were unpainted, but had a black plastic sleeve pressed over the exposed portion.

Dum-dum (3M Strip-Calk) will seal them to the bottom of the plenum panel.
