    '66 replacement signal flasher?

    Good day all,

Any luck on finding a functional replacement signal flasher at one of the local auto stores? My 224 has went belly up . I've tried a 552, but just a schosh too fast. Thanks.

    Michael,

Is it a round Tung Sol 224 you're looking for? If so, they appear on e-bay frequently.

Thanks Gary but looking for functional replacement from auto parts store. Ebay guys are way too pricey and I'm too tight. Surely someone is making a functional replacement similar to the 224.

        Michael,
I got this one on ebay for less than $15.00 encluding shipping. They are out there. I search for part numbers and not for "Corvette Parts" because you are right the Corvette parts are crazy on ebay.

I find NOS flashers at swap meets and never pay more than $1. If you want original & NOS parts for cheap money you pay in other ways, time and energy.

Michael, a TS 224 is correct for my 70 (among others), and before I bought one off ebay I believe I used a Tridon 552 I got from Auto Zone. It worked perfectly and I'm pretty sure I passed PV with it. I'm not sure if Mid Years would have some difference that would make the 552 not work correctly, but they're inexpensive and you might wanna give one a try.
              Good Luck

Pat thanks, however my original post indicates I'm using a 552. Does flash but believe fractionally too slow.

                  Re: '66 replacement signal flasher?

The 552 was designed for emergency flasher use. That means it's rated for driving a VARIABLE number of lamp loads. In an e-flasher application you blink both sides of the car at once AND the car might be electrically connected to a trailer so you don't know exactly how many lamps there are to flash...

GM designers intentionally used lamp load dependent flashers for the turn signal application. Why?

That gave the driver a visual indication, on the dash, when or more lamps were faulty (composite filament resistance of the branch circuit changed)...

So, to get the TS blink rate 'right', it takes BOTH the correct flasher as well as the proper lamps being installed. The older 12V cars used #1034 lamps while '64 and later cars used #1157 lamps.

The 1157 is considered a 'replacement' for the 1034, but it's about 20% brighter (candlepower) and has a different filament resistance profile. If you buy ready-to-install lamp assys for a restoration job, expect them to come stuffed with lamps. But, don't expect those lamps to be either #1034 or #1157 bulbs. They'll probably be a newer/better 1157 lamp substitute...

Sorry about that Michael, I should have read your original post more carefully.
