Black Lacquer Paint

I am going to restore my C2 Roadster which is factory triple black. I plan on taking the car to Duntov so I want to get lacquer paint. Any suggests where a good quality lacquer paint can be purchased. I live in NM and the regular supplier of Lacquer paint is not sure he can get me 2 gallons. Where is a good nation-wide supplier of the stuff. I finally have a non-metallic paint car and I want to use lacquer. Thanks for any Help, Rick

I stand to be corrected, but I believe that DDL 9300 black is still available from PPG

Maybe I spoke to the wrong gut at the front counter... He is supposed to get back with me on Monday. I hope I am able to find a secondary supplier of paint in the event my request is just too much for them to comprehend... Ha Ha Ha, Thanks!

I have used a local PPG supplier for lacquer paint. Do to the low volume of the sale of lacquer paint, they have stopped mixing lacquers unless you are willing to purchase containers of tints/colors needed. You may have to search different PPG vendors to find one that still hast the required materials needed to mix your color of lacquer, but I do believe PPG is still supplying lacquer paints.

You can contact Daryl at McHenry Paints in Frederick, MD or Hibernia Restorations in New Jersey.

There are likely others as well that can mix up Black Lacquer.

DDL 9300 is a "factory pack" paint - not mixed in the field. Even if your supplier no longer has a lacquer mixing machine, he should be able to order DDL 9300.

This same paint was used for all GM black acrylic lacquer jobs from 1958 to the end of lacquer use. My black Cosworth Vega is also DDL 9300.

Hurry up and order the black lacquer. Meanwhile more urgent is ordering the good lacquer thinner. My local Car Quest dealer said he is not longer handling the slow drying thinner. Just the cheap crap for cleaning spray guns, etc.

Duke I forgot there was a change in black about '79 or '79. Your car has a paint code of 99L. The later is 99S, which I think the DDL 9300 mateches. It is a darker black. It is undetectable unless you try to spot paint an earlier car with it. The 99L gets a brown hue when the two are side by side

Is the lacquer thinner not being made any more or does it not sell enough to justify Car Quest handling it? Also if one buys the thinner how long of a shelf life does it have?

I purchase the same brand (PPG) lacquer thinner as lacquer. I also purchase a hot and cold grade that will help the flow/blushing when the humidity and temperature change. (may not be needed if you have an enclosed spray booth with climate control) (I do not) I but a cheap grade of thinner from my local paint/hardware/auto part stores for clean up.

I have not had a problem purchasing lacquer thinner!

They have reduced the number of sku's of thinner. DTL-876 is the mid temperature, and will work in most instances.

Dupont stopped with the GOOD thinner 3602 no longer is 3602 the old 3602. Last car I did in lacquer I had to get PPG's DTL slow thinner to finish the job.

BIG PROBLEM WITH DTL SLOW THINNER over Dupont.....When I use dupont 3602 you can sand and polish within a few days with minimal shrinkage as well as tape the fresh paint without leaving a mark. DTL SLOW THINNER SLOWS THE PROCESS DOWN SEVERAL MONTHS. The paint stays soft 6-7 months longer than with Dupont 3602 so be careful with the painted surfaces.

I believe DTL 10 is cool temp thinner, DTL 105 is hot weather. I used to use the hot weather thinners to shoot hood ledges and door jambs, never doing anything else to them. They would look pretty good.

He bought ALL of Sherwin Williams' lacquer just before I retired. I wanted to buy it but didn't have a "safe" place to store 12,000 gallons of flammable liquid.
