    Oil line Fitting sealer

I am replacing the oil line gauge fitting kit at the back of the block on my '61 FI. Along with tightening it good is there a sealer to use on the threads to assure that the lines and fittings seal. Teflon tape seams to denigrate. Thanks

i my humble opinion nothing works better than non hardening permatex form a gasket in the little white plastic bottle.

      Re: Oil line Fitting sealer

I have never used any sealant on these fittings. By their nature/design, if a good snug fit does not seal it, then there is something wrong with the fitting and trying to seal it shut is just asking for problems down the road. Recall someone was talking about epoxy on a FI plenum in another thread, and I'm sure we all tried muffler cement in our youth. These are temporary measures at best. Thread tape is good if you are careful what you use it on and do it right, but even that should be avoided on everything but pipe threads. Loktite makes a lot of good poducts for most every type of joint or junction, if you must use something.

Loctite PST (pipe sealant with teflon) is THE best I have ever used. Just wipe off the excess when the fitting is tightened and there is no evidence that anything was ever used (just like the factory). Permatex also has the identical product, but I cannot remember the name

he posted "in the block" so that would be a pipe thread, correct ??? you should always use a sealant on a NTP thread if you want to make sure you don't have a leak.

be careful using teflon sealer on small fittings because the teflon reduces the friction and if not careful you can over tighten the fitting.

              Maybe this will help:

              Loctite #567 PST: Thread Sealant
(Permatex #59214 High Temperature Thread Sealant with Teflon)

Use this stuff on every threaded air connection, like macroline fittings or air gauges. Use it wherever you would have used Teflon tape. It's cleaner, wipes off easily, and will never rust or seize. How to use it properly: BEFORE screwing in the fitting, run a small bead of Loctite Thread Sealant halfway around the 2nd and 3rd threads on the end of the fitting. When you screw it in, the paste should smooth out around the whole thing and seal nicely. Wipe up any excess with a kleenex. The joint should be ready to use in about 30 seconds.

Larry I learned about PST when working on hydraulic systems. Pipe "dope" made things so hard to disassemble, started using tape, them found the PST. You could hand tighten a 3/4" pipe with 1,800 psi and it would not leak. Wonderful stuff

Thanks Guys! The teflon sounds like a winner! Hopefully the local FLAPS has some. Larry

Larry, My favorite is Loctite 545 hydraulic sealant. Use it on the ferrel of the line. Not the threads. Put it on with a toothpick or maybe a q-tip. Shake the bottle before using.
I use it on various places of the fuel injection units. It's a llife safer but the problem is you can only buy it at Industrial tool supply houses like Travers Tool. Or go on Ebay.
I have been using it for about 20 years now and love it.
                    Would fix your problem forever.
Nothing worse and uglier than white tape. I threw my roll away long ago. Judges hate it also. Guys insist on using teflon tape on the inlet fitting for fuel injections. #1 they split the castings. #2 the tape gets under the needle of the needle and seat for the float and you know the rest.

Agree. I always keep a tube in my toolbox. I started using this sealant in the chemical plants for special applications beginning around 1976. Haven't quit since.

                        John,

That sounds like great stuff for the FI'S. By ferrule do you mean the flared area?. It won't seep into the fuel?
