Doing the interior on my '63

Greetings all from SNOWY New Jersey....

It is time to do the interior on the '63... It will be Al Knoch seats, door panels, carpeting, etc.. I got the word from the archives on 3M adhesive remover... Just a couple of questions (and suggestions are always welcome)...

Sound deadening material - which is the best source? I would like to get something pre-cut for the car if possible...

Carpet adhesive - which is the best to use?

    Thanks!

    Joel

I don't have an answer for you Joel. Just pushing this back to the top so that more people can get a look at it. Aloha.

      Joel,

I think 3M makes a brush on adhesive for the carpet. I believe you brush both pieces like a contact cement for it to work best.

In 1963 there is no underlayment for the carpet so if you want originality it's a rubber backed carpet and that's it. If you want something different, Al Knoch may be able to suggest something. I would be concerned with fit using underlayment so be careful.

FWIW, I would think the 63 a good subject for underlayment due to the fact it's all pieces as opposed to molded sections.

Keep us posted Joel. I'm looking at new carpeting some day in the near future as well. Mine is all ok except the driver's foot well. I looked at Al's samples last winter meet when they did my seats, and it looked pretty close on color, pile, and backing - not perfect, but close enough that I might just buy the stuff and replace only a section or two. My footwells always have floor mats on them anyway.

Would you be doing your door panels too? (re: the carpeting at the base of each).

Heading over to the winter meet today, Friday and Saturday (20 miles for me). Also plan to spend some time at the Mecum auction with my son.

          Thanks guys.....

You know I have had this car since 2005.. Whoever had it last permitted the interior to get really musty, goodness knows where they must have stored the car! I still have green mold on the carpet edges, and all those interior vinyl pieces are hanging down!

I figure it is time to do the entire job and appreciate your suggestions and cautions... I will keep you posted!!

          Regards,

          Joel

            I did my 63 recently.

I used hushmat from the underside of the dash all the way back to the bulkhead. Installed under the headliner in my hardtop too. And also both doors.

I then applied new factory firewall insulation and jute. I did two layers of Hushmat over the whole tunnel. Followed by a thick ceramic tunnel blanket.
I then applied thin ceramic heat barriers on the front floors and rear deck topped with the 63 Al Knoch carpets. I also added jute pads between the ceramic barrier and carpets on the front floors. Looks factory on the outside. Insulated like a modern car on the inside. It is scary quiet with the hardtop on.

I used a tub of 3m glue. Brushed onto the hushmat. I then applied the carpet and pulled back up to allow it to get tacky. Then put back down.
I only used glue on the side pieces. The floors didn't need it.
